Former Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship holder Liz Cambage has been selected by the Tulsa Shock in the second round of the United States Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) draft, which was announced on 11 April in Bristol, Connecticut.

19-year-old Cambage will join her Bulleen Boomer’s team mate and former AIS athlete Rachel Jarry  who was also named in the WNBA draft. The two are following in the footsteps of former AIS scholarship holders Lauren Jackson, Abby Bishop (Seattle Storm) and Penny Taylor (Phoenix Mercury).

The two selections highlight the AIS Basketball program’s talent and depth. The program has a strong track record, producing 14  women’s basketball players (see list below) who have been selected in the WNBA draft.

Cambage was a member of the AIS Women’s Basketball program from 2008–09, which supported her training and development and her transition to the elite level. She has steadily progressed to become one of Australia’s best women’s basketball players.

Cambage is a current member of the Australian Opals women’s basketball team along with former AIS athletes Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor.

Cambage standing at 203cm tall was a member of the Bulleen Boomers team, which won the championship in the 2011 Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).  She produced a superb performance as the leading scorer and shot blocker averaging more than 22 points and 8.3 rebounds in the 2010–11 WNBL season. After a stellar season, she went on to win the WNBL Most Valuable Player Award.

Representatives of Tulsa Shock, who came to Australia to see Cambage play late in this year’s WNBL regular season selected her after top-prospect Maya Moore was chosen number one by Minnesota Lynx.
