Canberra families wanted for Football Homestay program
Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) are seeking Canberra families to provide homestay arrangements for the AIS Football program players in 2012 and 2013.
Under a new program structure the next wave of Australia’s elite footballers will be placed with local ‘host’ families rather than living in dormitory-style accommodation.
The AIS Football program aims to teach the scholarship holders teamwork, leadership and respect, and this new approach will see them get better life experiences to compliment their AIS sporting experience.
‘Relocation to an AIS Football program means moving away from home for the first time for many players, and with some of them as young as 15, it can be an overwhelming experience,’ said FFA Head of National Teams and International Football Development John Boultbee.
‘Staying with families rather than being housed together will give the boys the best all-round development for their football, education and personal lives.
‘Their parents can also decide which school their boy attends, giving the teenager a social and educational experience separate from his football development.’
Homestay involves a local Canberra family welcoming a scholarship player and possible future Socceroo into their home. The host families are given a weekly stipend of $250.
This safe supportive environment will provides stability for the player, allowing him to focus his efforts on his football and academic achievement.
If you are interested in being a host family (or know of anyone who might be) please email FFA Player Development Manager Jackson Kupke at jackson.kupke@ausport.gov.au for more information and to receive the complete AIS Football Homestay Program Application Package.
