Australian cyclist Luke Durbridge was tonight awarded the 2011 Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Junior Athlete of the Year award at a gala presentation held in Canberra.

Durbridge, nicknamed ‘Turbo Durbo’, has enjoyed tremendous success this year at both the world road and track cycling championships.

Minister for Sport Mark Arbib said the 20-year-old won gold in the U23 Individual Time Trial at this year’s UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen, before claiming further gold at the UCI Track World Championship in Holland as a member of the Australian Team Pursuit.

“Luke’s results internationally in 2011 demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the world’s best young cyclists,” Senator Arbib said.

“Luke’s performances throughout the year have him well placed ahead of next year’s London Olympics.”

Acting AIS Director Phil Borgeaud described the performances of Durbridge as simply outstanding.

“He has proven himself as a world-class champion on the road and the track by beating the best in the world on the toughest international sporting stages,” Mr Borgeaud said.

Other nominations for the AIS Junior Athlete of the Year award included Caitlin Foord (football) and Emma Jackson (triathlon).
