Following closely in her father’s footsteps, Chloe Esposito has arrived at the AIS in Canberra to prepare for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Chloe competes in the modern pentathlon, which includes five events: pistol shooting, épée fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, show jumping and running.

Chloe is coached by her father, Daniel Esposito, who represented Australia in modern pentathlon at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics. Daniel was also selected for the 1988 Games but had to withdraw with an injury. Chloe comes from a very talented sporting family. Not only is her father an Olympian, but her sister Emily is also one of the top air pistol shooters in the country and is a strong contender for Olympic selection.

Chloe has been working for the last five months to earn enough money to support her Olympic campaign. This two-week stretch at the AIS marks the start of her full-time preparation for London, after she qualified by winning the Oceania Championship in China in May this year. Chloe is at the AIS to experiment with altitude to see if she will use it in her Olympic preparation. Altitude training is something that many of the top pentathlon nations utilise.

‘This fortnight at the AIS is a fantastic opportunity for me to find whatever edge I can in the lead-up to London. It is very exciting to already have confirmed my spot in the team so I can spend the next eight months ensuring I have the best possible preparation. The facilities at the AIS are magnificent. In pentathlon the smallest margins can make a big difference in the overall result. I really appreciate all the help I am getting here and what I am learning will definitely improve my performance in London,’ Esposito said.

In full-time training Chloe would usually do five swim sessions, five run sessions, six shooting sessions, four fencing sessions, and three riding sessions every week.

Two weeks ago, Chloe showed her versatility across the sports by winning the Australian Championship in Sport Pistol (shooting) and finishing 7th in the National Épée Fencing Championships. Chloe also won the Australian and Oceania Pentathlon titles in 2012.

Her strongest sport of the five is swimming and she is expected to be in the top three pentathlon swim times at the Olympics next year.
