Anna Meares leads way for Aussies
06 Aug 2016
Anna Meares is ranked as one of the AIS's 'Best of the Best' and the champion cyclist is on course to be the most successful female cyclist in Olympic history.
Meares led the Australian team out into Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium to open the 31st Olympiad in front of a crowd of more than 70,000 and more than 10,000 athletes.
Meares was AIS Athlete of the Year in 2007 and 2011 and has been inducted into the Institute's 'Best of the Best'. Meares has won five Olympic medals at three Games, including two gold, and is aiming to defend her title in Rio.
The opening ceremony was marked by a kaleidoscope of colour and an electric carnivale feel. The stunning opening ceremony by Brazil told its indigenous story, the European invasion and artistically explained its modern day society exemplified by the thriving metropolis in Rio de Janeiro and surrounding cities.
Competition begins overnight, with the Women’s 4 x 100m swimming relay and the Men’s Road Cycling Race among the highlights to watch out for.
