Australia continued its domination of the women’s 4X100m freestyle relay to cap a stunning opening day of the competition at the Rio Olympics which resulted in the nation winning two gold medals and bronze to have it on top of the medal table.

The relay team of Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, and Bronte and Cate Campbell broke the world record the Australian women’s team set at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games clocking 3:30.65 seconds.

"It doesn't get better than that," Bronte Campbell said.

"There is nothing better than this in our sport, this is it, and I can't believe we finally achieved it after all these years of dreaming of it.”

Earlier in the day, Mack Horton opened Australia’s gold medal tally winning the men’s 400m freestyle.

Horton swam a personal best time to join Australians Ian Thorpe, Murray Rose and Brad Cooper as a gold medalist in the event.

"I kept telling myself that I had this and I was in control and I could do it. I had my eye on everybody on the outside,” he said.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet. I have a couple more races this week so I need to relax a little bit and focus on those but it's very exciting."

The brilliant start to Australia’s swimming campaign provided early signs that the sport is on track to recapture its past glory after a disappointing campaign in London, where the women’s 4X100 relay team won the country’s only gold medal in the pool.

The first medal won by Australia in Rio came in archery with the men’s team of Taylor Worth, Alec Potts and Ryan Tyack beating China 6-2 to secure a bronze medal and create history by becoming the first Australian team to medal in the teams event.

It was also the first time Australia has been on the podium at an Olympic archery event since 2004.
