20 indigenous boxers take shot at the big time
The Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program is bringing 20 indigenous boxers and some of their coaches to the Australian institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra to take part in a training camp to identify boxers with potential to represent Australia.
Established by the ASC in 2006, the NTID program operates in 17 sports, seeking out talent to represent Australia at the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, the 2012 London Olympics and beyond. The program has already exceeded expectations by producing some new athletes who might compete in this year’s Beijing Olympics, including cyclist Bridie O’Donnell who won the National Road Time Trial in Victoria at the weekend.
In boxing the NTID program will offer up to six scholarships for the best athletes emerging out of this week’s camp.
Already one boxer–Luke Boyd–has emerged from last year’s NTID program to enter the full AIS boxing squad under national coach Bodo Andreass and will have a chance to make the team for the Beijing Olympics.
Testing and development during the week-long camp has included sparring sessions, physiological screenings, nutritional education and fitness work.
For those athletes who do not receive a scholarship the NTID program can provide training and support at other Centre of Excellence locations around Australia.
Along with boxing the NTID Program has tested hundreds of potential indigenous athletes in a range of sports including track and field, hockey, basketball and softball.
General Manager of the NTID program Dr Jason Gulbin says the NTID initiative is starting to pay dividends with a number of talented indigenous boxers like Luke Boyd and Cameron Hammond coming through elite pathways.
‘It provides an effective pathway for emerging athletic talent to achieve their best in their chosen sports backed by AIS coaching and sports science expertise,’ Dr Gulbin said.
The ASC’s NTID program is delivered through a nationally integrated approach in partnership with State Institutes of Sport and State Academies of State.
