Taking an oath to prevent violence against women
The Australian Sports Commission is working to eliminate violence against women by pledging its support for White Ribbon Day, which takes place on Wednesday 25 November.
White Ribbon Day provides an opportunity for all Australians, particularly men, to take action and to swear an oath to oppose all violence against women. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that, currently, one in three Australian women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
The White Ribbon Day campaign works not only to draw awareness to the presence of violence against women, but also to change the prevailing attitudes and behaviour of those perpetrating violence against women.
To support the campaign, the Australian Sports Commission is encouraging all Australians — including sportspeople — to pledge their support by taking the White Ribbon Foundation oath to never excuse or commit abuse or violence towards women.
Many prominent Australians, including Sydney Swans AFL player Adam Goodes, are acting as ambassadors for White Ribbon Day and calling on all Australians to swear the campaign oath and to work to prevent violence against women.
