The 2009 Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Media Awards, which recognise excellence in sports journalism, were held on Thursday 3 December at Crown Casino in Melbourne.

This year, the award for Best Journalism on Community Sport went to Travis Cranley from Inside Sport for his piece entitled ‘Kiddie Wars’.

Travis Cranley’s article explores the mass growth of junior sport in recent years, detailing the complex factors that shape the sporting experiences of children everywhere in Australia, particularly the battle being waged to attract and maintain young participants.

In writing this article, Cranley displayed the affection and interest required to highlight the integral role of junior sport in our communities, as a bond between cultures, classes and generations.
