02 Nov 2009

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has produced eight new coaching and officiating videos which are now available on the ASC website. In addition, a number of videos previously only available for sale have been placed on the website for viewing.

Together, the eight new videos cover three different topics: mentoring, coaching juniors and intermediate coaching general principles.

Mentoring

There are three videos covering:

  • the initial meeting between mentor and mentee
  • mentor observation and advice at a training session
  • a feedback discussion between a mentor and mentee.

Coaching juniors

There are two videos covering:

  • group management and communication
  • game-day issues.

Intermediate coaching general principles

There are videos to support three of the modules in this program, including:

  • skill acquisition: decision-making and anticipation skills, along with implicit and explicit learning
  • sport psychology: goal setting and managing emotions
  • physiology: a basic introduction to energy systems, components of fitness and principles of training.

Two additional intermediate coaching videos are currently in development, which will cover the topics of basic biomechanics and coaching processes. These should be available by the end of November.

The new videos are approximately five minutes long, and can be used as part of mentor training, coaching general principles, or sport-specific accreditation programs. A range of sports are examined in the videos, and viewers are encouraged to apply the principles covered in each video to their own sport.
