The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) today announced the appointment of Warren McDonald, the Beijing Olympic Cycling coach, as the Athlete and Coach Coordinator of its National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program.

In his new role as NTID Athlete and Coach Coordinator, Warren will assist in finding and developing Australia’s next generation of cycling superstars.

Warren will play a leading mentoring role for the NTID in educating and supporting the work of coaches across all sports including the NTID cycling program. This role also involves coaching a group of elite cyclists in Queensland.

Warren said he was excited to be joining the NTID program and contributing to the mentoring and development of Australia’s high performance cycling coaches.

‘I am excited about working back with developmental cyclists having progressed from this level to becoming an Olympic coach,’ McDonald said.

‘I am also looking forward to working with and passing on my knowledge to Australia’s up and coming coaches.’

Warren started coaching as the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Scholarship coach in 1995. He then moved to become the ACT Academy of Sport Head Cycling Coach and made his way through the coaching ranks to become the National Women’s Road coach and the Olympic women’s Road coach for Beijing.

He brings a wealth of knowledge to the position having coached from developmental levels right through to the elite ranks.
New cycling programs will be introduced on the Sunshine Coast, where Warren will be based in this new role.
