Statement by John Wylie AM, Chair of the ASC:

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is very concerned to hear the emerging evidence from the Australian Crime Commission’s (ACC) investigation which comes from the report Organised Crime and Drugs in Sport released today. The vast majority of sports people are positive role models and our youth must have the ability to have confidence in their heroes.

The Australian Sports Commission will do whatever is required of it to support the efforts to maintain integrity in sport and is committed to partnering across government and sport to ensure fair and clean sporting competition.

We strongly support the enhanced powers of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) and the roles of the National Integrity of Sport Unit and the ACC.

The ASC’s principles of striving for greater levels of accountability through stronger governance structures within our national sporting organisations and working alongside organisations like the ACC and ASADA are ingrained in Australia’s Winning Edge 2012-2022 game plan announced last year.

At the time, I stated that our hunger for success cannot come at any cost and that the integrity of sport and our athletes is paramount.
