New AIS football pitch gets FIFA approval
19 Dec 2014
The redeveloped synthetic football pitch at the AIS has officially received FIFA 2 Star accreditation following an inspection of the facility by the sport’s world governing body.
The new generation synthetic pitch is the only one of its kind in Australia and is the same surface used by German glamour club Bayern Munich.
An official presentation of the FIFA 2 Star accreditation was made to Australian Sports Commission General Manager Steve Jones today by the pitch’s manufacturer Sports Technology International.
“This pitch has already been used by the Australian women’s team, the Matildas, and the AIS-based Football Federation Australia’s Centre of Excellence and all the reports have been very positive,” he said.
“It will continue to be used by some of the country’s finest footballers but it is also a community facility available for hiring by local and visiting teams and community groups who can enjoy the many benefits of this outstanding multi use surface.”
The surface is cooler to play on in extreme summer heat and, unlike black rubber infill synthetic systems, doesn't produce any rubber odour.
Construction of the upgraded pitch started in March and took about two months to complete. A FIFA inspection to ensure that the ground met the required standard took place in July.
The surface is similar to that which the Matildas will play on in next year’s World Cup in Canada. That will be the first major senior tournament to be played entirely on synthetic pitches.
