ASC pays tribute to Mike Gibson
23 Sep 2015
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of decorated sports journalist Mike Gibson, who has died aged 75.
Among his many accolades as a commentator, presenter and broadcast journalist over many decades, Gibson was recognised by the ASC in 2007 with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedicated contribution to sports journalism. Gibson also served as judge for the ASC Media Awards in 2010 and 2011.
While his love for the North Sydney Bears rugby league club was obvious, his deep passion for all sports was infectious.
Gibson was a pioneer of sports journalism in Australia and prolific across all forms of media throughout his career.
He started out as a print journalist, before moving into Sydney radio in the 1970s and then gaining a national profile as host of Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports from 1981.
He spent 16 years hosting the sports chat show Back Page on Fox Sports until 2012.
