ASC Media Awards 2016 deadline approaching
14 Nov 2016
Time is running out to enter the Australian Sports Commission Media Awards, with nominations strictly closing at the end of this week 5pm AEDT Friday, November 18.
The prestigious ASC Media Awards have been staged for 15 years and are the only awards specifically dedicated to recognising excellence in Australian sports journalism. The categories cover print, digital, broadcasting and photography, across metropolitan and regional media.
A new online service has been launched to simplify the application process and media can enter now by registering at ascmediaawards.awardsplatform.com
Esteemed sports journalist Mike Coward was last year bestowed with the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement Award and joins this year’s judging panel.
Coward, who has more than 50 years of media experience, said the awards not only provided individual recognition but were valuable for the reputation and future of the Australian sports media industry.
“These awards have significant value to sports media profession and I hope reflect a changing view,” Coward said.
“It long irked me that sports writing in this country had been devalued. In other countries like the United Kingdom and the United States and other places there is considerable kudos in being a sports writer, it has been a laudable ambition. Historically that has not been the case in Australia despite the fact that our national identity has largely been forged through sporting achievement and despite the fact that some of our very best writing has long been in sport
“I sense the new and diverse media might continue to bring about the change in attitude and that sports writing will be valued more highly than it has been historically.
“I was very proud to be awarded the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Finalists in the ASC Media Awards will be invited to a gala dinner and presentation at the Mural Hall, Melbourne, on 16 February 2017.
