Special grants to go to local community organisations
10 May 2011

The Gillard Government will provide special grants to local community organisations to encourage young people from ethnically diverse backgrounds to engage with sport as part of the 2011-12 Budget.

Minister for Sport Mark Arbib and Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Kate Lundy said eligible organisations could apply for grants between $5,000 and $50,000 per year to support the costs associated with sport and physical activities under the government’s Multicultural Youth Sports Partnership Program.

The grants, which opened last month, will be provided annually to local community groups and sporting organisations over the next three years.

“Sport is an important aspect of the Australian way of life.  It’s fun and healthy and teaches children self-discipline, team work and how to reach your goals,” Senator Arbib said.

“Sport and physical activity fosters a tolerance and understanding of different cultures.  On the sporting field all that matters is the game so it has the power to cross cultural, religious and political divides.

“These grants are available for clubs to help off-set costs such as membership frees, travel between sporting events and uniforms.”

Senator Lundy said it was very important for new Australians to be involved in the community and joining a local sporting club or organisations was a great way to build strong community connections.

“Australia is wonderfully diverse and this important new program demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving access and equality across all communities,” Senator Lundy said.

Finding space in a responsible Budget for this program shows that the Government is committed to programs that help foster inclusion and leverage the benefits of our nation’s diversity.

Applications for the grants opened on 29 April 2011 and close on 27 May 2011.  Successful applicants for the 2011-12 Multicultural Youth Sports Partnership Program grants will be announced in July.
