Tragic death of cyclist Carly Hibberd
Minister for Sport Mark Arbib today offered his condolences to the family and friends of Australian cyclist Carly Hibberd who was tragically killed during training in Italy overnight.
Hibberd had competed in many high profile European races, including the women’s version of the Tour de France, the Tour De L’Aude in 2010, as part of professional team Michela Fanini Record Rox.
'The Australian sporting community is today mourning the death of Carly Hibberd, a talented and dedicated Australian athlete who was pursuing her dream of reaching the pinnacle of cycling,' Senator Arbib said.
'The cycling fraternity and Australia’s cyclists competing in Europe are devastated by her tragic death and our thoughts are with them.
'A scholarship holder at the Queensland Academy of Sport between 2005 and 2007, Carly’s talent and potential was shown in 2008 when she won the Australian Women’s National Road Series title.
'Carly was well known for the dedication and enthusiasm she brought to every event and training session. She was a beloved team member and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.'
Hibberd moved to Italy in 2009 to pursue her career as a professional road cyclist and joined the Cassina Rizzardi A Style Fionucci team, based near Como, at the start of the current season.
'On behalf of the Government I pass on my condolences to her family and friends in the sporting world.'
