Minister Arbib welcomes home Cadel Evans
Minister for Sport Mark Arbib today welcomed Tour de France champion Cadel Evans as he arrived at Melbourne Airport.
Senator Arbib praised Evans for his achievement in becoming the first Australian to win the prestigious cycling event.
'Cadel’s efforts last month were watched by millions of Australians and his victory ranks alongside some of our country’s greatest sporting achievements,' Senator Arbib said.
'Since Cadel made his Tour de France debut in 2005 he has been on the cusp of winning the world’s most difficult cycling race, twice finishing second.
'He deserves all the accolades for his triumph in 2011, having shown great determination and skill in beating the world’s best riders.
'Cadel’s victory has inspired many young cyclists who will now want to emulate his success in the future.'
The Australian Government is a strong supporter of cycling, contributing more than $7.3 million in annual funding to support the development of the sport at both the elite and grassroots level.
Senator Arbib said he would join thousands of fellow cycling fans in Melbourne at midday on Friday for Evan’s victory parade.
'I encourage everyone in Melbourne on Friday to come out to Federation Square and wear yellow and welcome our champion home,' Senator Arbib said.
'The parade is a great way for us to recognise and pay tribute to his amazing achievement.
'Cadel has provided great inspiration to Australia’s elite cyclists as they prepare for next year’s London Games.'
Cycling received an additional $365,000 as part of the Green and Gold Project, to help the nation’s top athletes and team sports most likely to be in contention for a medal at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
