First Paralympic Hall of Fame inductees announced
The first inductees into the Australian Paralympic Hall of Fame were announced tonight as the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) marked one year until the 2012 London Games.
Minister for Sport Mark Arbib was on hand as Louise Sauvage, Sir George Bedbrook (deceased) and Frank Ponta (deceased) were officially announced as the first three inductees.
Senator Arbib said all three were well deserving of their place in Australian sporting history.
'Sir George, Louise and Frank have all made a massive contribution to Australian sporting history through their involvement in the Paralympic movement,' Senator Arbib said.
'Louise competed in four Paralympic Games, two Olympic Games and a Commonwealth Games, winning nine Paralympic Gold and four silver medals and two Olympic Gold medals.
'Frank Ponta is considered one of the country’s greatest Paralympians – competing in five Games, winning a gold medal, two silver and one bronze.
'Sir George was a pioneer in sending Australian teams to international games for athletes with disability, beginning his work in this area shortly after World War II.
“He was a world-renowned spinal surgeon and founded the Department of Paraplegia, now called the Sir George Bedbrook Spinal Unit, at Royal Perth Hospital in 1954, as well as the Paraplegic Benefit Fund Australia.”
Senator Arbib said the Australian team was well placed for another strong performance at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
'Our athletes are excelling across the globe in their sporting pursuits and are in a great position to repeat their excellent efforts from Beijing,' Senator Arbib said.
'We have a proud history of success at the Paralympic Games and I am confident that will continue in London.'
APC Chief Executive Officer and 2012 Australian Paralympic Team Chef de Mission Jason Hellwig said the APC was honoured to launch the Australian Paralympic Hall of Fame to recognise those who have played such a significant role in Australia's proud past.
'Although the APC is focused on success at the 2012 London Paralympics and future Games, we also place great importance on celebrating our rich history,' Mr Hellwig said.
The Australian Government will provide the Australian Paralympic Committee with more than $13 million funding in 2011/2012 as they prepare for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, including an additional $3 million in high performance funding.
