MINISTER WISHES GLOBAL GAMES TEAM SUCCESS
Minister for Sport Mark Arbib today wished Australia’s team for the 3rd INAS Global Games success as they depart to compete at Liguria on the Italian Riviera.
The Global Games, for athletes with an intellectual disability, begin tomorrow and finish on October 4.
Senator Arbib said he was looking forward to following the fortunes of the 58 member Australian team which would compete in Athletics, Basketball, Cycling, Futsal, Swimming, Table Tennis and Tennis.
“Australia has done exceptionally well at the Global Games since its inception in 2004 and the team will look to emulate its success from 2009 where it topped the medal tally,” Senator Arbib said.
“The support of the seven National Sporting Organisation’s, along with AUSRAPID, in bringing together the team must be commended and their cooperation and enthusiasm will help in their pursuit of success in Italy.
“Congratulations to organisations such as AUSRAPID which help create opportunities for our athletes with an intellectual disability to compete on the world stage.”
Australian swimmer Nerice Holland will compete in her second Global Games after winning eight gold medals in 2009 and being named athlete of the event. Nerice is the daughter of Australian Olympic medallist Steve Holland.
“Nerice’s achievements in 2009 were indeed spectacular and she set the pool alight with her performances,” Senator Arbib said.
“Nerice and the Australian team are all very talented athletes and will do an outstanding job representing their country on the world stage.”
The Australian Government contributed $75,000 towards the 3rd INAS Global Games, continuing its support for athletes with an intellectual disability.
Senator Arbib also thanked the 28 staff who would help our athletes compete.
