Great Australian sports people join Hall of Fame

14 Oct 2011

Minister for Sport Mark Arbib tonight congratulated the winners of major awards and seven new inductees into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame at its annual dinner.

Layne Beachley (surfing), Belinda Clark and Glenn McGrath (cricket), Kostya Tszyu (boxing), Greg Welch (triathlon), Judy Joy Davies (media) and Lorraine Landon (basketball administration) were tonight inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining 503 other members.

Minister Arbib paid tribute to the new inductees and the roles they played in Australia’s sporting history.

“The Sports Australia Hall of Fame gives us the opportunity to acknowledge our greatest sporting champions,” Senator Arbib said.

“The seven new inductees have all contributed magnificently to Australian sport and fully deserve their recognition.”

Senator Arbib said he was honoured to present Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman with her Legend of Australian Sport award.

“No one can forget the moment Cathy Freeman won her gold medal in the 400m at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games,” Senator Arbib said.

“It was a sporting moment that stopped the nation and the impact of Cathy’s victory is one that is still a stand-out, not only in athletics, but in Australian sport. It was also a significant moment for all Australians and reconciliation.”

Tour de France champion Cadel Evans was honoured as the recipient of the 2011 ‘Don’ Athlete of the Year.

“We have been able to celebrate Cadel’s fantastic achievement over the past two months and there is already the anticipation for his title defence in 2012,” Senator Arbib said.

“Cadel’s performance was a standout sporting moment of 2011 and it is great to see that recognised.”
