Kids urged to give skateboarding a go in Cairns
Young people in Cairns are urged to make the break, get off the couch and try out skateboarding at a free Break N Enter skateboarding day.
Minister for Sport Mark Arbib and Senator for Queensland Jan McLucas congratulated Skateboarding Australia for organising Break N Enter so that young Indigenous and non-Indigenous people can give skateboarding a go.
“The Cairns Esplanade Skate Park is a world-class venue and the Break N Enter event is a great way to introduce the next generation of skateboarders to this dynamic outdoor sport,” Senator Arbib said.
“Through the Australian Government’s Indigenous Sport and Recreation Program $10,000 in funding has been provided to Skateboarding Australia.
“This funding will provide free skateboard training by qualified coaches and all skateboard and safety equipment is available at no cost to participants so it’s a fun and easy way to try skateboarding and, importantly, get active.”
Senator McLucas said the Indigenous Sport and Recreation Program was part of the government’s on-going commitment to support community participation in sport and physical recreation activities.
“These activities contribute to improving the health and physical wellbeing of Indigenous Australians and all Australians,” Senator McLucas said.
“The government is committed to Closing the Gap on Indigenous disadvantage and what better way to try a new sport, get active and learn new skills than being part of Break N Enter in Cairns.
“It’s important to provide a diverse range of activities to lure non-active young people away from the telly and make a habit of healthy outdoor exercise.”
Break N Enter will be held at the Cairns Esplanade Skate Park all day on Saturday 22 October.
