Minister congratulates Bowls Hall of Fame inductees
Minister for Sport Mark Arbib today congratulated the inaugural inductees into Bowls Australia’s Hall of Fame who will be honoured at a function in Adelaide tonight.
Senator Arbib said the Hall of Fame was a fitting tribute to commemorate the sport’s most deserving figures for their achievements both on and off the green.
“Bowls Australia’s Hall of Fame has been divided into two categories, with 29 athletes and nine general members awarded induction today,” Senator Arbib said.
“The athletes chosen have competed at international level for Australia, while general members have shown excellence and outstanding achievement in support roles.
“All of the inductees are deserving of this honour and have helped make bowls one of the most played and loved sports in the country.”
Former champion Glyn Bosisto was named as the sport’s first ‘legend’. Bosisto represented Australia, New South Wales and Victoria 256 times and created so many records that he was dubbed the `Bradman of bowls’.
Senator Arbib said the 2010 Census reported more than 800,000 Australians participated in a game of bowls.
“More than 230,000 Australians are members of Bowls Australia and participate in competitions at bowls clubs around Australia. That shows the special efforts of those included in the Hall of Fame,” he said.
In 2010-11 the Australian Government provided about $1.5 million to Bowls to support our top level bowlers and boost participation in the sport.
