Minister for Sport Mark Arbib today praised the world-conquering Australian men’s hockey team as they recorded their fourth consecutive Champions Trophy success in New Zealand.

The Kookaburras defeated Spain 1-0 in the final to secure the trophy, becoming the first nation in history to win the event on four consecutive occasions.

Minister Arbib said the Kookaburras achievement was significant ahead of the London Games next year.

“The Kookaburras have been one of Australia’s best performed teams across the last few years and this result underlines their success,” Minister Arbib said.

“To remain undefeated throughout any tournament is a major feat and to do so in such impressive style was enjoyable to watch.

“Following their bronze medal in Beijing, the Kookaburras have been transformed under the tutelage of Ric Charlesworth and have won every major trophy on offer.

“Today’s victory underlines their world number one ranking and will give the team more confidence heading towards London next year.”

Minister Arbib also paid tribute to Kookaburras champion Jamie Dwyer who was yesterday named World Hockey Player of the Year.

“Dwyer is one of this country and the world’s greatest hockey players having now won the award five times – in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011,” Senator Arbib said.

“He has been a goal scoring machine in this tournament and it is a testament to how highly Dwyer is regarded by his peers given the awards are voted by the players.

“It was also a tribute to the team that Australian defender Matthew Swann, 22, was named 2011 World Young Player of the Year.”

The Australian Government is a strong supporter of Hockey, investing more than $6.7million in annual funding to support its development at both the elite and grassroots level.

The Kookaburras and Hockeyroos were granted an additional $180,000 as part of the Green and Gold Project, which was set up to give Australian athletes and teams the best possible training and preparation ahead of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympics Games.
