National Officiating Framework
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is committed to the further support of officiating through a number of strategic initiatives that are presently being investigated and discussed. Recruitment, education and retention are seen as the key factors in assisting with the development of officials at all levels. Sporting organisations routinely identify officiating as a major factor impacting on their ability to deliver their sport. To date there has been a limited coherent national approach to address issues in officiating.
The ASC has identified the need to work in conjunction with National and State Sporting Organisations, State Sport Federations and State Departments of Sport and Recreation to develop and deliver strategies aimed at increasing the number and quality of officials at all levels of Australian sport and to investigate ways in which officials can be supported.
Some of the initiatives the ASC has been working on include but are not limited to:
The National Officiating Scholarships (NOS)
Introduction to Officiating course online
Working with National Sporting Organisations (NSO) on their Officiating courses, and
The National Officiating Advisory Group (NOAG)
The NOAG consists of representatives from national sporting organisations and experts in officiating. The role of NOAG is to provide input to the issues affecting the development of officials at all levels of Australian sport, specifically to:
Provide leadership and strategic direction in the development of officiating and the officiating workforce within Australia;
Promote officiating and ambassadorship for the recognition and support of officiating;
Facilitate networking and cross pollination of leading practice ideas within the industry;
Represent the challenges, issues and concerns faced by officials;
Proactively leads the development and delivery of initiatives in NSOs to improve the
quality and quantity of officiating in Australia; and
Facilitate the co-operation of other organisations and partners as part of a national and international network to support officials.
It is important that the sport sector in general are aware of and are able to contribute to the work of NOAG, through sharing successful programs, identifying needs and developing approaches to address them.
