NTID Inaugural Sprint Program

The Surf and Kayak to London program is aimed at complementing the surf lifesaving commitments of athletes, and enhancing their surf-ski performance, while simultaneously preparing them for competition in flat-water kayaking at the 2012 London Olympic Games and beyond.

The inaugural Surf and Kayak to London program commenced on the Gold Coast in 2006 and applications were received from athletes across Australia. Fourteen athletes were selected in the senior program and they worked under the guidance of triple Olympic medallist and 11-time world title holder, Katrin Borchert.

Within six months, athletes were contesting state and national competitions. Within eight months, athletes were competing against top Australian paddlers and collecting medals at state and national championships.

One athlete, Jacob Clear, joined the 'Surf and Kayak to London' program with a background in surf ski paddling and limited flat-water kayaking experience. Within 12 months, Jacob was named in the Australian under 23 flat-water Kayak team, won two medals at international kayak regattas, and was awarded a Queensland Academy of Sport scholarship.

Sport Overview

The aim of the NTID canoe/kayak program is to achieve success at national and international level in canoe/kayak through the scientific identification of talented athletes and the provision of access to high quality development programs. The NTID canoe/kayak program implements talent identification and development programs around the country to support talented athletes for development to national and eventually international level. The NTID program operates three types of talent identification and development programs:

  1. Talent detection programs to identify and develop athletes from outside the sport who possess the characteristics required for success in canoeing/kayaking.
  2. Talent transfer programs to identify and develop athletes with a background in elite sport or another paddling sport such as surf ski paddling into canoeing/kayaking.
  3. Talent development programs, called national talent squads, to support the growth of young paddlers already involved in canoe/kayak to enhance their development and improve their chances of making an Australian junior team.

NTID Canoe/Kayak projects run in flatwater and slalom disciplines, and target males and females aged 13 to 25 years for progression to Australian teams.

Talent Identification programs in canoeing have had much success in Australia producing two Olympians in Kate Barclay and Lisa Oldenhof, both of whom competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics, as well as more than 40 Junior World Championship or Junior World Cup competitors.

Testimonials

“My NTID coaching has been rewarding in providing me with more talented athletes to work with and the provision of “upward pressure” they apply to my existing squad paddlers.” John Newton, NTID Sprint Canoe Coach

“The integration of the NTID program in the national team pathway in canoeing has resulted in increased exposure to high quality coaching and training opportunities for athletes through coordinated camps and international competition tours. In addition to the positive impact on athlete development, the NTID program has increased the opportunities for coaches to develop within the high performance pathway." Richard Fox, National Performance Director, AIS Canoeing

“The program and in particular the regular testing and training camps has squarely focussed the athletes attention on their own performance and accountability and in turn has brought out a greater commitment on their part to achieve results for the NTID program and themselves. The coaches and coaching sessions are first class … the training environment provides a stable and supportive environment and is a vital ingredient in maintaining the athlete’s focus, enthusiasm, motivation and level of interest in the sport. The training camps are exceptional and help refocus the attention and importance of developing the best from all athletes." Graham & Nicole Bendeich, Gold & Green NTID Program parents

“NTID's 'rapidly to London and Beyond' has had a major impact on slalom canoeing in Victoria. Coaches have at last been able to become fully qualified and get consistent work coaching dedicated athletes. This program has ... provided a much needed pathway for those who were outside the normal school programs.” Victoria Milne, NTID Canoe Slalom Coach

“Thanks heaps for the camp at the Gold Coast. It was a great experience and I took heaps of new skills from it. Looking forward to the next one in NSW.” Rhyann Burton-Hockam, Athlete
