Sport Overview

‘The Diving Spring’ program is a combined effort of Diving Australia and the NTID program. ‘The Diving Spring’ program is aimed at maximizing the current national high performance structure and streamlining the identification and fast tracking process to produce junior elite divers for the state institutes and academies of sport, national training centres (NTC), and ultimately the Australian Institute of Sport program and future Diving Australia national teams.

'The Diving Spring' program aims to create an ‘eternal spring’ of divers flowing into the NTC programs who have the potential to win medals at Olympic Games. To achieve this, the focus of 'The Diving Spring' will be on both talent identification and talent transfer.

‘The Diving Spring’ is Australia’s biggest ever search for the next generation of champion divers.

Diving is a multi-medal sport which has achieved consistent success at the international level over the past six years.

Brisbane

Diving Australia in cooperation with the Australian Sports Commission’s NTID program launched its inaugural ‘Diving Spring’ talent identification program for diving at the Chandler Dryland Training Centre in Brisbane in May 2007.

52 males and females aged between 8 to 16 years arrived at the Dryland Training Centre on Saturday 26 May for the ‘Diving Spring’ Talent Identification Testing session. The majority of the enthusiastic athletes had a background in gymnastics, trampolining, acrobatics or diving.

Diving Australia’s NTID Coordinator, Chantelle Newberry welcomed the athletes and introduced them to AIS National Head Coach Hui Tong, QAS Head Coach Xiang Ning Chen and Talent Identification Coach Jin Lan Wang who worked with the athletes through the skills component of the testing session. AIS divers were strongly represented as they ran the various testing stations to assess body shape, flexibility, upper and lower body strength and power, and core stability and strength.

A squad of eight athletes have been selected to form the first ‘Diving Spring’ squad and have commenced training at same pool as the QAS and AIS squads at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane under the guidance of Jin Lan Wang.

Testimonials

“Diving Australia is very excited that we had such a great turn out to the first Qld talent testing day. There were many kids that showed they had the makings of a champion diver and with the help of Jin Lan, QLDTID coach, we stand a solid chance of boosting the young talent in Queensland. The athletes understand that this is a unique opportunity that has been presented to them and they are taking full advantage of their big break into elite diving.”Chantelle Newbery, Olympic Gold Medallist and Diving Australia National Talent Identification Coordinator.
