Cross cultural mentor training to develop female sports leaders

Mentor to develop female sports leaders
Encouraging Mandarin speaking women to be more involved in the sports industry.
16 Jun 2010

Guidance on sports leadership is now available in Mandarin to assist Mandarin speaking women develop their leadership skills and confidence in the sports industry.

Funded by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), and delivered through Australian Womensport and Recreation Association (AWRA), the mentoring module Mandarin translation caters to Australia’s growing Asian population, and particularly, to include and engage culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women and girls in sport.

The mentoring module was chosen for translation to encourage Mandarin speaking women to be more involved in the sports industry, as a participant, a coach, an administrator or committee member.

The main topics covered in the module are:

  • an introduction to the concept of mentoring
  • mentoring background information
  • the various types of mentoring programs, including the set-up, matching the mentee and the mentor, gender issues, monitoring and evaluation.

This is the first time sports leadership information has been translated into another language, which is designed to reach out to Mandarin speakers, to involve and motivate them to participate in local sports clubs and associations. The Mandarin module can be found at australianwomensport.com.au under ‘what’s new’.

The mentoring module is an example of the work the ASC is currently doing to enhance the involvement of CALD communities in sport through the All Cultures program, which connects people from diverse communities to their local sporting clubs and associations.

All Cultures resources, including videos highlighting existing multicultural sport programs and tools and tips for clubs, coaches and officials, are now available on the ASC website at ausport.gov.au/allcultures
