Kevin Sheedy shares expertise

Kevin Sheedy
Let's get back to basics
31 Jul 2008

'We’ve got to get back to learning to win’ is just one of Kevin Sheedy’s sayings that coaches from around Australia have heard this month as part of a series of coaching workshops supported by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and conducted by arguably one of Australian Football Leagues most enduring and imaginative coaches.

Sheedy’s workshops have been organised as part of the ASC’s High Performance Coaching program. High Performance Coaching Consultant, Terry Wheeler, said that Sheedy was an obvious choice to motivate and educate elite coaches around Australia.

‘Sheedy is creative in his approach and thinks outside the box. He has an impressive history in AFL and that experience and those lessons learned can be related to all sports,’ Wheeler said.

The workshops follow on from the successful series of High Performance Coaching workshops through 2007-08, featuring John Buchanan, former Australian Cricket Team coach. The feedback and expectation on the current series of workshops with Kevin Sheedy reinforces the opinion that ‘coaches love to hear from coaches’. Both John and Kevin represent extraordinary achievement at the highest level of their sports and have the wonderful ability to relate to those coaches of a similar standing, but also providing empathy and practical insights for our community coaches.

This program of workshops is conducted in conjunction with state institutes and academies of sport and state departments of sport and recreation. Sheedy has presented at workshops in Melbourne, Bendigo, Perth and Hobart, and is scheduled to present in Adelaide (22 and 23 September), Canberra (20 and 21 October) and looking to complete Sydney and Darwin by the end of 2008.

A player and coach for 40 years, Kevin Sheedy, an ASC coaching ambassador, has an unsurpassed record of involvement in eight Premierships and in 1998 Kevin broke the record for coaching more professional AFL games than anyone else in history. He now holds the AFL record for the most games combined as a player and coach with 886 games.
