Training and courses

Sport specific officiating courses

Many sports in Australia are part of the National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS). This scheme provides training for officials at all levels across a range of sports.

Contact your National Sporting Organisation to find out the requirements under the NOAS to gain accreditation. Most state or regional sporting organisations will run courses at various times throughout the year, so check in advance for their calendar of courses to ensure that you don’t miss out.

Some sports offer flexible learning programs, where you may be able to complete some parts of training via correspondence or online. Check with your sport for details.

Officiating general principles

There are officiating general principles courses available which cover the aspects of officiating common to all sports. You can complete the general principles component of your first level of accreditation through the online Introductory Officiating General Principles Course. There is also an Advanced Level Officiating General Principles program available through state coaching and officiating centres.

Other courses

Also keep an eye out for other courses in your area that may assist you in further developing your skills as an official. These may include:

  • Community Education Workshops
  • Play by the Rules online courses in making sport safe, fun and fair
  • First aid courses
  • University and TAFE officiating courses

These courses may be run through one of your local sporting organisations or your State Coaching and Officiating Centre as well as through other community or local government organisations. Follow the link below to the Australian Sport and Recreation courses list.
