Olympic history (pre London 2012)

Basketball was a demonstration sport in St Louis in 1904 and achieved full medal status in Berlin in 1936. At each Olympic Games (from Berlin until Mexico City in 1968) the United States did not lose a match and consequently won seven straight gold medals. The former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) inflicted the first defeat on the United States in the final in Munich in 1972.  The women’s competition was introduced four years later in Montreal.

Summary of past Australian Olympic team results

  • The Australian women’s team won a bronze medal in Atlanta in 1996.
  • They improved to silver medal performances in Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008, losing to the United States on all three occasions.
  • The best placing achieved by the Men’s team has been fourth, which they achieved in Seoul in 1988, Barcelona in 1992 and Sydney in 2000.
