Game description
2 teams, 1on either side of a court. Players in each team receive a number that corresponds with a player on the opposite team. The coach calls out 2 numbers. The players with those numbers run into the playing area and contest the ball that has been thrown or rolled onto the court. The player that gains possession, and their partner, become the attackers, while the others become defenders. The attackers try to score a goal. (Play in 2 teams of even numbers).
What you need (setting up)
- A flat, obstacle free indoor or outdoor area.
- 2 x cones or markers to define the playing area.
- 1 x basket or similar target.
- 1 x size 5 basketball or a ball of a similar size.
What to do
- Players are divided into groups of 6 or 8.
- Each group stands on opposite sides of the playing area.
- Each player is given a number (with a corresponding number on the other team).
- The coach randomly calls 2 numbers, e.g. 1 and 5. Those 2 players from each team run into the playing area while all other players stay on the sideline.
- The first number called is the only player allowed to contest the ball.
- The coach rolls or throws the ball into the playing area. The nominated players contest the ball to gain possession.
- The team with the ball becomes the attackers and the other team the defenders.
- Attackers dribble the ball, passing to each other to try and score a goal.
- Modified basketball rules apply. Teams must have a shot at the basket within 30 seconds.
- If defenders intercept the ball, they pass it back to the coach. Defenders then become attackers.

Scoring
- The first team to score 10 points wins.
Change it
- Remove the time limit on shooting.
- Score 1 point if the ball hits the square behind the ring, 2 points if a goal is scored.
- Add an extra ball and remove the defenders.
- Increase the numbers on court.
- Have every team-mate touch the ball before the team can shoot.
Safety
- Players waiting on the sideline should be a safe distance away to avoid interference with play.
- Clear the court before new numbers are called.
- No contact between players.
- The ball cannot be taken from another player’s possession.
Ask the players
- When defending, what should you do to have a better chance of intercepting the ball?
