Small group: Rapids

Associated sport: Canoe/Kayak
Indoor-friendly: No
Pool-friendly: Yes

Game description

Players work on remaining ‘in’ their canoe as they try to move it through the rapids. Play in teams of 3 - 4.

What you need (setting up)

  • A pool or safe open water.
  • 4 - 6 x foam pool noodles unbound per team.
  • 2 x paddle bats or kick boards per team.
  • 1 x personal flotation device (life jacket) per person.

What to do

  • Players determine how to group their noodles before they begin.
  • 1 team begins paddling across a pool as the remaining players create rapids in the water.
  • Teams must get back 'in' their canoe and continue on the course each time they 'fall out'.
  • Swap teams.

Canoe/kayak - Rapids

Change it

  • Set an area for rapids and an area for calm water.
  • Let players making the rapids determine where they will be placed across the pool, i.e. will the entire group move with the paddlers across the pool or will they spread evenly across the pool?
  • Add items in the water to paddle around.

Safety

  • Perform activities in enough water and away from the edges to avoid colliding with the bottom or sides of the pool.

Ask the players

  • What can you do to keep your canoe stable?
