Game description

A cycling activity involving balance, agility and vision within a grid.

What you need (setting up)

  • Any flat area, e.g. large hall, tennis/netball courts, oval).
  • 4 x cones or markers.
  • 1 x bike per rider.
  • 1 x bike helmet per rider.
  • 1 x hair cover per rider (if helmets are borrowed).

What to do

  • Mark out a 5 x 5 metre grid using cones or markers.
  • 8 - 12 riders travel around the grid in any direction attempting to avoid one another.
  • Maintain 2 bike lengths between riders.

Scoring

  • Riders score a point for each time they ground a foot, move outside the grid or touch another rider/bike.
  • Riders with fewest points after 2 - 4 minutes win.

Change it

  • Reduce the grid size as riders improve.
  • Coach occasionally calls 'Change direction!' to increase difficulty.

Safety

  • Ensure the playing area (size, surface, terrain) is appropriate for the ability level of all riders.
  • Ensure the playing area is obstacle free and away from walls.
  • Ensure there is sufficient space between riders.
  • Wear helmets and shoes during the activity.
  • Perform bike checks before riding:
    • Brakes - do they work?
    • Stem and handlebars - are they tight? Do the ends of the handlebars have plugs in them?
    • Seat - is it firm? Make sure it doesn’t turn or tilt.
    • Chain, pedals, gears - do they change safely?
    • Wheels - do they spin freely?
    • Tyres - do they have enough air?
    • Fit - is the seat height correct? Can the handle bars and brakes be reached?
