Olympic history (pre London 2012)

Men’s platform diving was first on the Olympic program in St Louis 1904 and springboard was added in London 1908. Women’s platform diving was introduced in Stockholm 1912 and springboard started in Antwerp 1920.

In Sydney in 2000, synchronised springboard and platform diving events were introduced for both men and women.

Summary of past Australian Olympic team results

  • Chantelle Newbery's gold medal in 2004 (ahead of Loudy Tourky with the bronze) in the women's platform was Australia's first Olympic diving gold since Dick Eve in 1924.
  • Chantelle’s husband Robert won two bronze medals in the men's synchronised events to bring his Olympic medal tally to three. Chantelle and Robert became the first Australian husband and wife to win medals at the same Olympic Games.
  • At the 2008 Games in Beijing, 16-year-old Melissa Wu teamed up with Briony Cole to win a silver medal in the platform synchronised event.
  • One of the greatest Australian stories of the 2008 Games came from the diving when Matthew Mitcham produced the highest scoring dive in Olympic history on his last dive to win gold in the 10-metre platform.
