Game description

Using the same rules as ‘Simon Says’, the coach calls out commands for players to perform various diving actions – standing position, tuck, tuck and roll.

What you need (setting up)

  • 1 x mat per child or soft gassed area.

What to do

  • Players should only follow the instruction to demonstrate various diving actions when the coach says, 'Coach says......'.
  • Mix up the calls adding some non-diving actions.
  • Vary the speed of the calls.
  • Do not eliminate players.
  • Actions can include:
    • Standing Position – Starting with the hands by the sides move into a standing T position with arms outstretched and feet together; raise arms over the head and grab a flat hand (interlock webs of hands at thumbs and face palms upwards). Arms are straight and covering the ears. Hold the head and shoulders high and roll the hips forward to create a flat back. Return arms to the sides to finish one round.
    • Tuck - From standing position move into a tuck position on the floor, by pulling the knees tight into the chest, pointing the toes during the tuck, grabbing each leg with a hand on the shin (not the knees) and looking over the knees while squeezing the tuck tight.

    Diving - Tuck

    • Tuck and roll – Move into the tuck position; rock backwards, rolling onto the upper back and then back to a sitting tuck position

Change it

  • Vary movement requirements according to player ability or mobility.
  • Ask different players to make calls until all have had a turn.

Safety

  • Remind players of the positions before undertaking the activities.
  • Make sure there is enough space between players to safely perform the activity.

Ask the players

  • What do you have to remember to do in the tuck position?
  • What do you have to remember to do in the standing position?
