Game description

Players race each other in a relay, completing a series of show jumps, dressage movements and a ‘cross country’ run.

What you need (setting up)

  • 4 - 6 x mini hurdles or other jump substitutes.
  • 4 x cones or other markers to set the course.
  • 1 x broom, pool noodle or hockey stick as a ‘horse’ per team.
  • 1 x rope or skipping rope to tie around the horse’s head as reins.

What to do

  • In teams, players divide and stand opposite 1 another.
  • Riding their horse, player’s race to the other side performing a particular skill and tag the next team member.
  • Continue until all members have completed the relay.
  • Vary the pace required, e.g. walk, trot (slow jog or skip), canter (fast run) .
  • Vary the skill required:
    • jumping over objects.
    • weaving around objects.
    • high knee lift walks (lifting knees to touch hands).
    • side passes (scissors walks).
    • running.

  • First team finished wins

Change it

  • Follow the Leader - all members of a team do the same activity at the same time, changing leaders and activities each leg of the relay.
  • Race without a ‘horse’.

Safety

  • Ensure the playing area is clear of any obstructions.
  • Ensure sufficient space between teams and players.
