Olympic history (pre London 2012)

Gymnastics appeared in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 with a men’s artistic gymnastics competition and large group performances. The sport has been on the Olympic program ever since, with a women’s artistic gymnastics competition first appearing in Amsterdam in 1928.

Rhythmic gymnastics slowly emerged from the shadow of the long-established artistic discipline to enter the Olympic Games program in 1984.

Trampoline competitions for both men and women were added as a gymnastics discipline and made their Olympic debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Gymnastics is one of only five sports to continually feature at the Olympic Games since Athens 1896. The others are athletics, cycling, fencing and swimming.
