Game description

Runners start in the middle, move to one end and try to hit a target. Players can either dribble the ball for 3 steps and then pass, or pass after 3 seconds. Interceptors must prevent the ball from hitting the target. (Teams of 3 or more).

What you need (setting up)

  • Suitable indoor or outdoor playing area.
  • 4 x cones or markers to define the playing area.
  • Tape to mark 'No-Go' zones.
  • 2 x targets - large cones, cricket wickets or alternative.
  • 1 x size 0 or size 1 handball or equivalent ball per game, e.g. tennis ball.

What to do

  • 3 v 3 or 4 v 4.
  • Each team has has a goal area.
  • 1 team (attackers) starts with possession in the centre.
  • Attackers:
    • move the ball around by passing between team-mates.
    • try to avoid being tagged with the ball. If tagged the attacker must pass the ball.
    • hit the target from a throw outside of the 'No-Go' area
  • Interceptors:
    • try to intercept the ball being thrown by the attackers.
    • try to tag the attacker with the ball.
    • try to prevent the ball from hitting the target.
    • become the attachers when the ball is intercepted and try to hit their target.

Scoring

  • Attackers - one point for reaching and hitting their target.
  • Interceptors - one point if they intercept a ball.

Change it

  • Change the method of travelling with the ball, e.g. hop or jump.
  • Define a distance the interceptors must stay from runners, e.g. 1 metre or more.
  • Change the size of the target, e.g. create a goal to throw through or a bin to hit

Safety

  • Ensure a smooth playing area with adequate space between groups.
  • No contact between players.
  • The ball cannot be taken from another player's possession.

Ask the players

  • If you don't have the ball, how can you help your team-mates?
  • Is it better to pass to your team-mate when you are close to the defender or further away?
  • Where will you move to defend the cone?
  • How can you put pressure on the person with the ball?
