Game description

Using rolled-up newspapers to hit a soft ball, 2 teams try to score goals.

What you need (setting up)

  • 4 x cones or markers for a set of goals at each end of the playing area.
  • 1 x bat per player using 1 - 2 pieces of rolled up newspaper per player (rolled diagonally for longer bats), stuck together with tape.
  • 1 x soft ball per game.

What to do

  • 4 v 4
  • Players try to score a goal by passing the ball to 1 another and hitting it through their goals.
  • Practise passing, trapping and hitting.

Scoring

  • Number of goals scored.
  • Not scoring is an option.

Change it

  • Vary the team sizes to cater for varying ability levels, e.g. 4 v 2
  • Try other combinations, e.g. 1 v 1, 2 v 3, 2 v 4.
  • Use hockey sticks instead of newspaper.
  • Introduce scoring zones - attacking players must strike for goal outside of the zone.
  • Introduce a goal-keeper for each team.
  • Introduce a zone for a mobility-restricted player that is out of bounds to opposition players.

Safety

  • Choose an area away from walls and other obstructions.
  • The ball must be hit below waist height.
  • Encourage players to call ‘Mine!’
