Game description

A relay race using elements from modern pentathlon. (Play in teams of 3 - 4.)

What you need (setting up)

  • An indoor or outdoor playing area 20 metres in length
  • 8 x cones or markers per team – 1 at the beginning and end and 3 x groups of 2 spaced 5 metres apart.
  • 1 x bean bag per team.
  • 2 lists of activities with descriptions placed at the first set of cones:
    • Fencing – lunge between the cones.
    • Swimming – Freestyle stroke around the cones.
    • Show jumping – Two feet jumps over each cone.
    • Running – Circle around each cone.
    • Shooting – Throw bean bag from one set of cones to the next  trying to hit the cones.

What to do

  • Teams line up behind their starting cones.
  • When the coach says ’GO!’, the first player completes the first activity at each set of cones then runs back to tag the next player.
  • Continue through all activities until all players have completed the relay.
  • Shooting (last leg of the relay): Players must remember to replace the bean bag at the first set of cones, before the next runner can begin.

Scoring

  • First team to complete the relay wins.

Change it

  • Vary the number of times a team must complete the relay.
  • Vary the number of times an activity must be completed at each set of cones.
  • If playing with teams of 5, allow the teams to determine which player must complete each skill and run through the relay once.
  • Increase or decrease the distance of the course.

Safety

  • Ensure the playing area is clear of any obstructions.
  • Ensure there is enough space between groups and players.
