Olympic history (pre London 2012)

Rowing was scheduled to appear in Athens in 1896 but bad weather caused its cancellation. It made its Olympic Games debut in Paris in 1900.

Women’s rowing was introduced at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games and lightweight rowing, for men and women, was introduced in Atlanta in 1996.

Summary of past Australian Olympic team results

  • Australia first sent rowers to the Stockholm Olympic Games in 1912.
  • The famous “Oarsome Foursome” won the coxless fours in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996, becoming the first Australian sweep-oared crew to win an Olympic title.
  • James Tomkins and Drew Ginn combined to win the men's coxless pairs in Athens. At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Ginn partnered with Duncan Free to win back-to-back titles. Ginn won three gold from three Olympic Games, having missed Sydney in 2000 through injury.
