Game description
A relay race using tacking and jibing (Play in teams of 3 – 4 on land or 2 in a boat on the water).
What you need (setting up)
- Land:
-
- An indoor/outdoor playing area 20 metres in length.
- 6 x cones or markers per team evenly spaced.
- Alternative to land if water is available:
-
- 1 x boat per team
- 1 x buoy at turning mark upwind from the starting mark.
- 1 x personal flotation device per person.
What to do
- Teams line up behind their starting cones.
- When the coach says ’GO!’, the first player zig-zags around the cones (tacking) up the course then runs in an arc back to the beginning (jibing) to tag the next player.

Alternative to land if water is available:
- Where water and boats are available, players tack and jibe to race others to complete a course.
Scoring
- First team to complete the relay wins.
Change it
- Players form pairs. They complete the race holding 2 items to form a boat.
- Vary the number of times a team must complete the relay.
- Increase or decrease the distance of the course.
Safety
- Ensure the playing area is flat and clear of any obstructions.
- Ensure there is sufficient space between groups and players.
Ask the players
- Why is tacking necessary if the wind direction is coming from the front?
