Olympic history (pre London 2012)

Synchronised swimming became an Olympic sport in Los Angeles in 1984. It is now one of two disciplines on today’s Olympic Games program to be contested only by women, the other is Rhythmic Gymnastics.

The sport began with solo and duet events and remained like this for three Olympic Games (Los Angeles in 1984, Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992) until they were replaced by an eight-woman team event in Atlanta 1996. The 2000 Sydney Olympic Games saw the duet return to the Olympic program to join the team event.

  • Donella Burridge represented Australia when synchronised swimming began at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and placed 12th in the solo event.
  • At the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Australia qualified a team as host nation and placed eighth.
  • At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Australia qualified a team for the first time (other than Sydney in 2000), finishing seventh.
