Olympic history (pre London 2012)

Weightlifting featured in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens 1896. The two events in 1896 were the one-handed lift and the two-handed lift and they were open to all competitors regardless of their weight. The sport appeared again in St Louis 1904 and then in Antwerp 1920 after which it commenced an unbroken run on the Olympic Games program.

Summary of past Australian Olympic team results

Women’s weightlifting was added to the Olympic program in Sydney 2000.

  • Australia won its first gold medal in weightlifting at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games with Dean Lukin winning the gold medal as a super heavyweight.
  • Also in Los Angeles 1984 Robert Kabbas won the silver as a light heavyweight.
  • Australia’s Stefan Botev won the bronze medal in the super heavyweight category in Atlanta 1996.
