Game description

A relay race using elements of weightlifting. (Play in teams of 3 - 4.)

What you need (setting up)

  • An indoor/outdoor playing area 20 metres in length.
  • 6 x cones or markers per team.
  • 1 x foam pool noodle, hockey stick, broom or rolled up newspaper as the 'bar' per team.

What to do

  • Teams line up behind their starting cones.
  • When the coach says ’GO!’, the first player runs out to their end cone and performs a set number of repetitions of the Clean and Jerk then runs back to tag the next player:
    • bend to the bar, lift it to the shoulders and remain in a squat position;
    • jump to one leg in front of the other (lunge position) and move the bar above the head keeping the arms straight;
    • bring the feet back to shoulder width apart with arms still in the air;
    • drop the bar to the thighs;
    • drop the bar to the ground.
  • The bar must be dropped to the ground between each repetition.
  • Continue until all players have completed the relay.

Scoring

  • First team to complete the relay wins.

Change it

  • Vary the number of times a team must complete the relay.
  • Vary the number of times an activity must be completed by each person.
  • Increase or decrease the distance of the course.

Safety

  • Ensure the playing area is flat and clear of any obstructions.
  • Ensure there is enough space between groups.

Ask the players

  • What happens if the hands are not spaced evenly?
  • Why is it important to have the feet directly under the body when holding the bar above the head?
