Game description

Players in groups race each other by passing a hoop up and down their line while performing the weightlifting actions of the clean and jerk.

What you need (setting up)

  • 1 x hula hoop per group.

What to do

  • In groups, players from a line, one behind the other approximately 1 metre apart.
  • The first player in the line steps into the hoop and completes the Clean and Jerk movements:
    • bend to the hoop, lift it to the shoulders and remain in a squat position;
    • jump to one leg in front of the other (lunge position) and move the hoop above the head keeping the arms straight;
    • Bring the feet back to shoulder width apart with arms still in the air;
    • drop the hoop to the thighs;
    • drop the hoop to the ground.
  • Players call actions as each person completes the activity - ‘Shoulders, head, thighs and drop’.
  • Player jumps forward out of the hoop when the actions have been completed.
  • The next player jumps into the hoop and repeats the activity.
  • Go up and back down the line. 
  • Teams should be back to their starting location.

Scoring

  • First team to finish wins.

Change it

  • Use pool noodles or brooms and pass the item on instead of jumping in and out of a hoop.
  • No racing. Encourage good technique.

Safety

  • Ensure the playing area is clear of any obstructions.
  • Ensure there is enough space between groups and players.
