Medical conditions
A young person's physical well being is also of great importance to parents especially when they are participating in sport on a regular basis. Some young people have chronic medical conditions which may affect their participation in sport. Particular care needs to be taken in the case of long term conditions such as:
- Asthma
- Diabetes
- Epilepsy
- Heart or lung disease
- Hepatitis
- Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Other medical conditions, such as dehydration and sun stroke can be brought on by environmental conditions. Sport providers often have policies and strategies to reduce or prevent risks associated with the inclusion of young people with such medical conditions in sport. Contact your local or state sporting organisation for more information.
Please note the list above is not exclusive, there are other conditions that may affect young people’s participation in sport.
