National Member Protection Policy Template
The national Member Protection Policy template is designed to assist National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) develop and implement their own policy. It provides a general framework for position statements, organisational and individual responsibilities and codes of behaviour that apply to its members and activities. It summarises state/territory child protection requirements and outlines processes such as complaints handling, tribunals and investigations. Page iv provides a diagrammatic explanation of the framework.
State, Regional, District and other affiliated associations and clubs should formally adopt the national policy (with any modifications to take account of state legislative requirements). State associations and clubs that adopt the national policy should customise their own policy to reflect their particular circumstances and context. An alternative condensed club version of the policy template is also available from the ASC website.
Why do sports need a Member Protection Policy?
Sporting organisations have legal obligations in relation to harassment, discrimination and child protection. They also have moral obligations to establish appropriate standards of behaviour and to provide safe and respectful sporting environments. As a condition of funding, the ASC requires national sporting organisations to develop, implement and regularly update policies and procedures that assist sports to comply with the law and improve the sporting environment.
