Hockey
Hook in2 Hockey is Hockey Australia’s Targeted Sport Participation Growth Program, run in partnership with the ASC.
Hook in2 Hockey replaces its predecessor Take It On! and is designed to be a safe and fun introduction to hockey. The program incorporates the ‘Game Sense’ approach to learning which involves participants learning about the game by playing small-sided games that replicate the skills and tactics used during a game of hockey.
Hook in2 Hockey can be run over six to eight sessions, depending on the available resources of each club/ association running the program. The last session of the program is a known as the ‘Carnival’ where the group is split into small teams and a round-robin event is held. The focus of all sessions is on maximum participation and fun for all those involved.
In addition to the coaching sessions, participants receive a Just Hockey ‘Equipment Kit’ consisting of a hockey stick, shin-pads and a ball which is theirs to keep as part of the program fee of only $40. In addition participants also receive a Hook in2 Hockey show bag at the Carnival which contains a poster, water bottle, sticker and fridge magnet.
Hook in2 Hockey generates an income for a club or association as they retain $10 per participant of the program fee. This revenue retained by clubs and associations ensures the ongoing sustainability of the program in addition to the potential benefit of creating an increased club membership base. The cost to the club or association, payable to Just Hockey, for each participants ‘Equipment Kit’ is only $20. The remaining $10 of the program fee goes jointly to the respective state/ territory hockey association and Hockey Australia for the provision of resources and promotional material.
Hook in2 Hockey requires club personnel to act as the coordinators and coaches for the program. The intention is for these ‘Leaders’ to be young club members with the ratio of Leaders to participants suggested at between 1:12–1:15. This allows for effective group management and maximum participation. Clubs or associations who run a Hook in2 Hockey program are able to share their experiences and knowledge with other ‘Centres’ through a newsletter which is distributed to this network.
Each club/ association involved in Hook in2 Hockey receives a number of resources designed to allow them to run a successful program. These resources are available either free of charge or at significantly reduced prices:
- Centre Admin CD – step-by-step guide of how to conduct a program
- Games Guide – an easy to read resource containing session plans
- Promotional resources – Hook in2 Hockey information and merchandise
- Leaders apparel – Hook in2 Hockey t-shirt and hat for the Coordinator & Leaders
- Just Hockey ‘Program Pack’ – 20 field markers (inc. stand) & 12 training bibs (RRP $125) for only $85
Each state/ territory has a Hook in2 Hockey Community Officer based at the association office, whose role it is to promote and manage the program. The Community Officers are the first point of contact for all Hook in2 Hockey Centres to provide support and resources during the program.
